A father described as warm and caring passed away after sustaining a brain injury following an alleged attack outside a public house.

Marcus Lee Carpenter, aged 37, succumbed to his injuries in hospital on February 24, 2026, three days after the alleged assault that occurred outside the Picture House establishment in Ebbw Vale on February 21.

Following his death, family members issued a statement portraying Marcus as a cherished son, partner and parent who possessed the most generous disposition and was always willing to lend assistance to others. Those who knew him described him as truly unique with an ability to brighten any gathering, while a crowdfunding campaign has been established to cover funeral expenses.

Kyle O’Callaghan, 30, entered a guilty plea for the killing of Mr Carpenter during an appearance at Newport Crown Court on March 27. He has been cautioned to expect a significant custodial term when proceedings resume on May 15, during which victim impact statements from Mr Carpenter’s relatives are anticipated to be presented.

Senior Area Coroner for Gwent, Caroline Saunders, initiated an inquest into Mr Carpenter’s passing on Monday, March 30.

According to Ms Saunders, the medical explanation for Mr Carpenter’s death was a hypoxic brain injury sustained during the assault combined with a haemorrhage.

The inquest has been postponed to allow for additional evidence to be collected, including a hold placed on the coroner’s inquiry while the criminal police investigation continues.

The inquest is slated to reconvene at 2pm on January 7, 2027.
