Welcome to our real-time travel updates.
Reports indicate that an oversized vehicle will travel along the M4 motorway today.
Traffic Wales confirms the procession will commence at 10:30, with hold-ups anticipated at M4 Junction 32 Coryton Roundabout and the westbound exit slip road.
The agency also advises that the section between Junction 28 Tredegar Park and Junction 32 Coryton, alongside the A470 northbound from Coryton to Abercynon, may experience slower journeys.
The journey is forecast to last approximately 45 minutes, with some travel disruption likely throughout this period.
We do not know what the oversized load comprises but will be monitoring road cameras for developments.
Keep checking back for further information.
An oversized load is classified as a vehicle meeting any of these criteria:
a mass exceeding 44,000kg
an axle load surpassing 10,000kg for a single non-driving axle and 11,500kg for a single driving axle
a breadth greater than 2.9 metres
a rigid length exceeding 18.65 metres
Typical examples include:
Components for wind turbines (particularly blades or tower segments)
Large transformers for electrical infrastructure
Construction machinery (such as cranes or oversized equipment)
Prefabricated structures (bridge sections, modular buildings)
Industrial components being relocated between ports and facilities
While the precise cargo remains unconfirmed, oversized loads along this corridor frequently relate to wind farm projects, with substantial elements like turbine blades or tower sections being transported inland from ports.
Previously, particularly large and weighty cargoes have traversed Newport and South Wales.
In 2024, enormous equipment pieces including transformers, turbines, and generators were conveyed from Newport Docks to Hirwaun Power Station.
These ranked among the heaviest loads ever transported on Welsh roads and required specialist trailers and police accompaniment for safe passage.
Welcome back to our live updates.
The cargo has reached the Tredegar Park area and traffic is consequently building up.
The oversized load has arrived and traffic is backed up.
A closer view of the oversized load near the Tredegar Park area.
Traffic is now quickly increasing near Tredegar Park.
The covered cargo in the image appears to be hauled by L. Allelys, a reputable firm specialising in transporting large and heavy equipment such as transformers and wind turbine components throughout the UK, including Wales.
Traffic is now quickly increasing on sections of the A40 as a result.
Traffic remains backed up.
The load on the M4 appears to be transported by L. Allelys, a firm that moves massive equipment including wind turbines and power station parts.
They have completed major projects previously, including conveying enormous turbines and generators from Newport Docks up to Hirwaun Power Station.
It is travelling through Tredegar Park as this is the primary corridor from the docks into the Valleys for overdimensioned loads.
A witness reported seeing a lorry with cars travelling down the M4 at approximately 20mph, with police escorts occupying two lanes. The witness observed the convoy around Junction 28, heading westwards.
Travel delays persist.
Journey times have increased by nine minutes and are growing on the M4 westbound between J28 A48 (Tredegar Park) and J30 A4232 Pentwyn Link Road (Cardiff Gate).
The typical speed is ten mph.
A police escort is moving the turbine components west.
The turbine is progressing near J30 – J32 Pontprennau (westbound).
Traffic is now considerably delayed on the M4 west due to the turbine convoy. Traffic near J29 – J30 Michaelston-y-Fedw (westbound).
There are substantial delays of twelve minutes and growing on the M4 westbound between J29 A48(M) and J32 A470 Northern Avenue (Coryton Interchange).
The Welsh Government has directed millions towards wind turbine schemes across Wales, including £8 million to Swansea-based Marine Power Systems, a company developing deep-water offshore turbine technology.
Many maintain that turbines produce clean energy by converting wind into electricity, generating employment and strengthening the renewable energy sector.
Traffic is now considerably delayed on the M4 west due to the turbine convoy. The turbine near J32 eastbound entry slip.
Traffic is now considerably delayed on the M4 west due to the turbine convoy. Police directing traffic near J32 northbound entry slip from A470.
Traffic is now considerably delayed on the M4 due to the turbine convoy. J30 – J32 Lisvane (westbound).
There are substantial delays of sixteen minutes and growing on the M4 westbound between J29 A48(M) and J32 A470 Northern Avenue (Coryton Interchange).
Reports from witnesses about the convoy continue.
Another observer noted that the convoy was visible from the opposite carriageway and was moving at an extremely slow speed, urging drivers to avoid the area if possible.
Some readers have suggested that such large movements could be carried out at night when roads are quieter, arguing that nighttime transport would reduce traffic disruption and potentially decrease pollution levels.
The convoy is still in progress and is now making its way towards the A470.
Traffic is backed up in the following areas.
Journey times have increased by seven minutes and are growing on the A470 northbound between M4 J32 (Coryton Interchange) and A468 Caerphilly Road (Nantgarw Interchange).
The typical speed is 15 mph.
Traffic appears to be easing on the M4 around Gwent. Thank you for following our live updates regarding this incident.
