Newport played host to the Music Trail 2026, transforming the city centre into a vibrant celebration of sound with a complimentary festival-style programme spanning numerous venues.
The event showcased performers ranging from emerging local artists to well-known Welsh musicians, drawing enthusiastic audiences keen to discover the area’s thriving musical landscape.
Friday’s opening night delivered impressive headlining sets from Goldie Lookin Chain performing at The Corn Exchange, complemented by rising talents including Xempa, Parcs, and Yaang.
A distinctive aspect of the event enables attendees to drift between different locations, experiencing the diverse range of musical genres and live entertainment on offer.
Saturday’s programme featured performances from Matt Le Vi, Murder Club, Ynys, and Melin Melyn, providing concert-goers with an abundance of options throughout the evening.
Various venues including Le Pub, Newport Cathedral, The Circle, and The Riverfront presented a blend of homegrown and Welsh performers. Notable appearances included Lady Leshurr at The Circle, Bruna Garcia at Le Pub, and Martha O’Brien at The Riverfront, each delivering memorable sets.
Beyond the live music, the festival incorporated workshops and activities. The returning Past Port Tours invited participants to explore Newport’s musical heritage through discussions celebrating the city’s working-class musical pioneers.
Festival attendees also savoured a selection of street food offerings from the Newport Food Festival in John Frost Square, with vendors including Scoffle Ya Waffle, Happy Dumpling 365, Dough Business, and The Dragon Melt providing culinary variety throughout the weekend.
Frontman Matthew Pimm, performing as King Pimm with The Hotdogs, remarked that spectators of all ages were enjoying their performance, with particular enthusiasm from younger attendees taking in the complimentary music festival. He noted that The Hotdogs appreciated being involved in such an exciting venture bringing together some of Wales’ finest bands while generating positive energy throughout the city centre. It was wonderful to observe so many young people moving through the city centre in a safe and vibrant atmosphere. The band received a wonderful reception from a friendly and supportive audience at Fire & Ice, and they hoped that as the opening act for Music Trail 2026, they had given it a strong start before the evening’s later performances built momentum, culminating with Goldie Lookin Chain.
With complimentary access at every venue and a roster highlighting the breadth of Newport’s musical community, the Newport Music Trail 2026 reinforced its position as one of the city’s most anticipated annual occasions.
As the city thrummed with music and excitement, one observation rang true. Though Goldie Lookin Chain may have delivered the standout set at The Corn Exchange, each venue contributed its own memorable moments to the programme.
