Four offenders have been sentenced to prison terms for arson, assaulting a neighbour with a blade, possessing a knife in a public area, and breaking into a property.

Below are details of their cases.

Sam Francis

Sam Francis was sentenced to three years in prison after deliberately setting fire to a property on August 4, 2023.

The 28-year-old pleaded guilty to reckless arson in Tredegar, where he destroyed or damaged a woman’s residence. He was also ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge. His address was listed as Brompton Place in Tredegar.

James Badham

James Badham entered a neighbour’s house with a knife and stabbed him during a confrontation that arose from a dispute about parking.

The 68-year-old victim confronted Badham about parking outside his property in Rhymney on August 20 last year. Badham confronted him, and they struggled before falling to the ground after the victim pushed and struck the defendant. The victim began taunting Badham as he departed.

Once the victim and his wife returned inside, Badham kicked down the front door and attacked the victim with a lock knife, stabbing him in the upper arm.

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to pin Badham to the ground until police arrived.

The victim required hospital treatment the following day for two stab wounds to his right upper arm. The defendant suffered a broken nose and dislocated shoulder.

Badham, aged 34 and residing in Old Brewery Lane in Rhymney, admitted wounding with intent, carrying a bladed weapon, and criminal damage. He received a sentence of three years and four months, and a five-year restraining order was issued protecting the victims.

Fathal Moshen

Fathal Moshen, 38, was apprehended by officers while carrying a chef’s knife on the street.

Police arrested Moshen on Bolt Street in the Pill district of Newport on January 7. He was convicted last month of possessing a bladed weapon in a public place following a trial. The item was identified as a Santoku kitchen knife.

The defendant, from Alexander Road in Pill, failed to attend his sentencing at the city’s magistrates’ court and was sentenced in his absence. He received an eight-month prison term, a £150 cost order, and an arrest warrant was issued.

Adam Waters

Adam Waters, 39, committed a burglary at Glanwern House in Pontypool between January 25 and January 28 last year, stealing a Samsung tablet.

Waters, who had no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the burglary.

He was sentenced to 19 months in prison.
