A restaurant operated by twin brothers has been named Italian Restaurant of the Year at the Welsh Restaurant Awards 2026.
Gem42, situated in Newport, secured the accolade in a category that recognised culinary distinctiveness, reliable preparation standards, and premium produce. The establishment outperformed competitors from throughout Wales.
The venue on Bridge Street began trading in 2018 under the leadership of Sergio and Pasquale Cinotti, both qualified Italian culinary professionals whose expertise spans pastry work, upscale dining, and confectionery production.
Sergio Cinotti expressed gratitude for the achievement, stating that this acknowledgment strengthens their belief in their daily efforts and validates Newport’s reputation as a destination offering diverse excellent dining options.
The siblings previously established Gemelli Desserts before diversifying into restaurant and patisserie operations, eventually unveiling Gem42 as their principal dining establishment in Newport.
This most recent triumph joins an already impressive array of honours accumulated by the venue.
Gem42 has built its reputation around a tasting-menu concept that merges Italian and French methodologies with produce sourced seasonally from Welsh suppliers.
The kitchen champions what it describes as underutilised ingredients and a natural approach to dining that prioritises wellbeing, complemented by an on-site garden that provides vegetables and micro herbs.
Since 2022, Sergio Cinotti has overseen kitchen operations, directing a specialised research facility for developing recipes, testing new dishes, and refining contemporary plating styles.
The offering undergoes regular updates and has featured marine dishes, locally sourced meats, and elaborate sweets that showcase the brothers’ confectionery skills.
