Rivals of Reform UK chief Nigel Farage have condemned his use of the phrase foreign speakers when referring to Welsh people in a video produced for payment.
The observation emerged in a recorded message where Farage explained his disappointment at missing a wedding because half the attendees were Welsh.
Labour, Plaid Cymru, the Conservatives and several other political groups voiced their opposition to the footage, which was distributed through the Cameo service where famous individuals record personalised clips for a charge.
A representative for Farage insisted such recordings should not be treated as political statements or campaign activity.
However, critics argued it should be regarded as an opinion tainted with prejudice toward Wales, the Welsh language and Welsh citizens, including the many who sing the nation’s anthem.
Farage has on multiple occasions voiced unease about hearing languages other than English on London’s transport network, contending this signals poor assimilation and causes places to seem not like Britain.
In 2014, Farage recounted feeling uncomfortable while travelling on a peak-time service from the capital, noting he did not hear anyone speaking English until the train had travelled through numerous stops.
