Welsh performer Duffy will appear in a fresh documentary detailing her journey to stardom and the kidnapping and sexual assault she experienced, speaking about these events publicly for the first time.

The 41-year-old, who was raised in Letterson close to Fishguard, will discuss her life and period away from the spotlight in a feature-length documentary coming to Disney+.

The artist, whose birth name is Aimee Anne Duffy, achieved prominence in the late 2000s after putting out her first album Rockferry. The most recognisable track from that collection, Mercy, reached the top position on the UK charts for five consecutive weeks during 2008 and launched the performer to worldwide fame. She subsequently issued a second record, Endlessly, in 2010 before disappearing from public view.

The performer disclosed almost ten years afterwards that she had been administered drugs, assaulted, and held against her will.

The new documentary will follow the performer’s existence, from her Welsh childhood through her musical career to today, roughly 15 years after the assault occurred.

The film will additionally feature conversations with the performer’s relatives, companions, and industry colleagues.

Director Gill Callan stated that Duffy’s existence has been defined by achievement and recognition, but equally by suffering, resistance, and an unyielding sense of identity.

She explained that she finds the contrast between fragility and self-assurance compelling in this narrative, along with how someone can undergo profound trauma yet still discover a distinctive and commanding means of expression.

Sean Doyle, senior vice president of unscripted programming at Disney+, noted that this production would provide Duffy with the opportunity to narrate her account directly.

He mentioned that they had sought compelling stories led by women in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen, and that sharing Duffy’s represents an honour as their inaugural collaboration. Most significantly, he expressed admiration for Duffy’s openness and bravery in bringing her experience to light.

Duffy’s debut album Rockferry secured the Grammy Award for best pop vocal album in 2009 alongside three Brit Awards encompassing best British female artist, British breakthrough act, and British album.
