Malpas Road in Newport will be inaccessible to vehicles during essential surface renewal operations this weekend, with the shutdown representing the second stage of the improvement scheme.
The route will be blocked from 10.30pm on Saturday, March 28, until 5.30am on Monday, March 30, as Newport City Council progresses its significant resurfacing programme.
The prohibition on through-traffic will apply throughout Sunday, March 29.
An additional overnight closure might be required from 11.30pm on Monday, March 30, through to 4am on Tuesday, March 31, should progress on the scheme necessitate it. The authority has indicated it will publicise confirmation of this extension through its social media platforms on Monday.
According to a Newport City Council representative, the scheme follows the initial phase of surface improvements completed on Malpas Road the previous month. The upcoming works will involve renewing the road surface on both carriageways between the M4 junction 26 roundabout and thenorthernmost Goodrich Crescent entrance, near the Lyceum Tavern public house.
Residents seeking to reach Goodrich Crescent and Brynglas will be able to do so by travelling via the Harlequin roundabout, Brynglas Road and Aston Crescent.
All other vehicles will need to follow clearly marked alternative routes.
Households in the vicinity will receive correspondence from the council outlining the precise access arrangements in place. Motorists are being urged to prepare accordingly.
The council representative stated that individuals organising travel through this section during these periods should make arrangements well in advance. The scope of the project and associated restrictions will inevitably cause inconvenience, and appreciation is extended to local residents and visitors for their tolerance during the execution of these highway improvements.
This initiative constitutes the second portion of the Malpas Road resurfacing scheme, with additional weekend operations scheduled to take place following the Easter break.
The authority has indicated that precise dates for subsequent restrictions will be announced in due course.
The works form part of Newport City Council’s £6.6 million comprehensive road surface renewal initiative, intended to enhance and preserve vital transport corridors throughout the city.
The council has advised that all scheduled times remain tentative and may alter should adverse weather conditions or unexpected issues arise.
Those seeking additional information regarding the resurfacing programme and specific particulars about the Malpas Road works should consult the authority’s official website.
