RSPCA fury after ministers’ vote to keep fur imports

Published on

The animal welfare charity has condemned the decision not to prohibit the bringing in and selling of fur products.

According to the charity, a consultation showed that nearly all respondents, 97 percent, wish to see the closure of an outdated trade in which creatures endure pain for the sake of fashion, with most also supporting restrictions on imports.

The head of public affairs at the organisation stated that animals should all be able to live without experiencing suffering.

The group expressed deep regret that ministers declined to outlaw the commercial trade and importation of fur, though they acknowledged the establishment of a discussion panel to explore potential further measures.

While any initiative aimed at cutting fur imports represents progress, campaigners maintain that more decisive intervention remains necessary to halt the trade within Britain, particularly given that the continent seems poised to approve the operation of fur farms.

UK legislation has prohibited fur production for over two decades, yet according to the organisation, imports still mean British consumers contribute to the avoidable distress caused by breeding and using animals for their pelts.

The official noted that creatures are frequently kept in bare enclosures where they cannot carry out instinctive activities, and are destroyed using cruel methods.
