Railway station campaign hailed as game-changer for town

Published on

The local authority has acknowledged the achievements of an initiative aimed at securing a new rail station for the locality.

During the standard session of Magor with Undy Town Council held on March 9, members recognised that the efforts led by the Magor Action Group on Rail have created opportunities for the town’s future growth.

Those present at the gathering included Councillors Frances Taylor, Paul Cawley, Penny Kirkham, Mike James, Donna James, Victoria Hammett-Johnson, Mike Boyland, Zuzka Hilton, and Owen Hammett-Johnson.

Councillor Dr Mario Bisi sent apologies for his non-attendance.

Members of the public were offered the chance to raise issues and share perspectives, though no contributions were made.

The meeting chair expressed gratitude to local groups and enterprises for their support of the St David’s Day event, with particular recognition for business support and projects officer Rachel Jones.

Addressing the rail initiative, the chair commended the Magor Action Group on Rail for their sustained efforts since 2012, pointing out that the Magor station would be the first of five stations to be built, with construction slated to begin in 2029.

The council examined the importance of implementing thorough traffic management strategies given this scheme and looked forward to receiving input from Monmouthshire County Council.

The council additionally reviewed and formally accepted the minutes from their prior gatherings in February.

They also examined and approved the financial documentation for February, resolving that the required signatures from the responsible financial officer and Councillor Mike James should be obtained without delay.

A suggestion to look into acquiring land for a fresh allotment location was put forward, with a decision made to progress this opportunity.

Any significant costs arising from this undertaking will be covered from the professional fees budget.

The council also agreed to examine possibilities for enhancing youth services in the area while requesting progress on their proposal to expand the Magor with Undy Town Team to include two full-time officers.

Concerning a dog waste collection service, the council evaluated two estimates and chose to engage Merlin Environmental Services for a 12-month contract commencing April 1, 2026. Under this arrangement, the dog waste containers will be emptied on a weekly basis.

To improve the local environment, the council received estimates for summer plantings and floral arrangements.

Ground Cover Garden Care LTD was selected as the provider for 2026.

The council also deliberated on their reply to a consultation regarding planning guidance for the Gwent Levels National Natural Resource Area.

The responsibility for drafting a corporate response was delegated to the clerk, with all members requested to provide their comments by March 20, 2026.

A report from the Magor with Undy Placemaking Partnership was also received, highlighting the creation of a ‘Delivery Group’ within the partnership.

The terms of reference for this group were endorsed, and Councillor Owen Hammett-Johnson and Councillor Hilton were put forward as representatives on this new body. Both individuals accepted their nominations.

Before concluding the session, Councillor Kirkham gave a brief report on efforts to involve residents in various activities at the Hub.

Upcoming meeting dates were confirmed, with the next standard session scheduled for April 13, the annual gathering for May 11, and a further standard session for May 18.
