Elizabeth Duggan, chief executive at parkrun, stated that over the past two decades, parkrun has expanded from a regular neighbourhood running gathering into an important public health initiative, assisting in lightening the strain on the health service.
She added that the organisation possesses both the capability and desire to further assist the government’s goals for a healthcare system focused more on prevention and community-based care.
Sport England’s statistics demonstrate notable financial benefits for the NHS: depression-related savings of 13.8 million pounds, type 2 diabetes savings of 13.5 million pounds, and 9.2 million pounds from reduced appointments with doctors and hospital admissions.
The parkrun practice initiative, delivered in collaboration with the Royal College of General Practitioners, involves over two thousand medical practices recommending parkrun to those under their care.
Charlotte Osborn-Forde, chief executive of the National Academy for Social Prescribing, explained that social prescribing enables family doctors and connection workers to link individuals with various types of assistance, ranging from financial guidance to housing help and pursuits such as parkrun.
