This nostalgic feature revisits sporting milestones as Newport marked Mo Nasir’s bronze medal triumph at the Commonwealth Games in March 2006.

The boxer, aged 20 at the time and originating from Alice Street in Pill, was defeated in the light-flyweight semi-final by England’s Darran Langley, finishing 9-13.

Mo’s father, Abdul, spoke to his son by telephone following the result and offered words of comfort. He explained that his son was devastated, requiring reassurance to settle his disappointment and acceptance of the outcome.

Abdul voiced his admiration for his son’s accomplishment while suggesting that the weight of expectation might have impacted his performance in the ring.

Mark Tucker, who previously taught Mo physical education at Duffryn High School, observed the enthusiasm among pupils, noting their celebration of the bronze achievement. According to Tucker, Mo brought honour to the educational institution.

Roy Chambers, who served as chairman of St Joseph’s boxing club where Mo developed his skills, shared his thoughts on the young athlete’s experience. He suggested that Mo appeared somewhat overwhelmed by the occasion, as it represented his inaugural major competition. Chambers expressed collective pride in Mo’s performance and predicted future success, indicating confidence that Mo would secure another medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He described Mo as having developed into a formidable young man with significant potential ahead.
