New safeguards introduced ahead of Welsh parliamentary ballot

Published on

Steps are being taken to safeguard those standing for office and the electorate in the forthcoming Senedd poll.

Cardiff has signed off on preparations prior to the May ballot to guarantee protection and order throughout the voting period.

This encompasses reinforced laws, greater law enforcement engagement, and fresh capabilities to tackle intimidation, digital attacks, and false information.

Cabinet secretary for housing and local government Jayne Bryant MS stated that behaviour such as harassment, bullying, threats and physical harm directed at election contestants has no position within Welsh democracy, and that her administration has been backing the Jo Cox Civility Commission’s efforts to confront hostility and mistreatment in political life.

The commission recently released a document titled ‘A Renewed Call to Action’ containing guidance for devolved administrations, elected officials and those seeking elected office.

Ministers have partnered with the Electoral Commission, with the Electoral Management Board overseeing delivery of the updated Elections Information Platform.

Officials are additionally joining forces with Westminster and other organisations via the Defending Democracy Taskforce.

Bryant expressed approval for the recent expansion of police security through Operation Ford to cover every Senedd member and electoral candidate.

A trial Candidate Diversity Grant supported creation of a Candidate Resilience Guide to help individuals cope with hostility and mistreatment.

Ensuring the election proceeds safely will depend on effective partnership between returning officers, police services and government agencies throughout the campaign period.
