A yellow weather warning covering south-east and south-west Wales has been issued by the Met Office for Storm Austen, which is forecast to bring winds of up to 70mph later in the week.
The storm is due to arrive on the night of Thursday, October 22, with the most severe conditions expected after midnight and during the morning of Friday, October 23.
The warning remains in force from midnight until 2pm.
Westerly to north-westerly winds are forecast to develop across southern Wales as the system approaches from the south-west.
Pembrokeshire is expected to experience the earliest effects.
The storm will subsequently travel east, with conditions deteriorating towards Gwent.
Friday morning is forecast to bring the strongest winds before they gradually weaken as the system moves onwards.
Gusts of 50mph to 60mph are considered likely, while coastal and exposed areas could experience 70mph or higher.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast, creating the possibility of difficult travel conditions.
Potential disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services has been identified.
Power interruptions, the closure of roads and bridges, and damage to buildings are among the other possible consequences.
Storm Austen opens the named storm season for 2026/27, and the Met Office indicates that Storm Boelo could arrive soon afterwards.
