Representatives from Newport City Council have inspected the location of Awen’s inaugural affordable housing project within the city boundaries.
The housing association, which rebranded from Monmouthshire Housing Association, intends to construct 42 residential units at this particular site.
Council members Saaed Adan, responsible for housing and planning oversight, and Kate Thomas, representing the Stow Hill electoral division, toured the premises to learn about the proposed development’s potential to deliver sustainable, affordable accommodation for residents.
Awen’s chief executive Gwyndaf Tobias and development director Chris Kinsey guided the councillors through the site while outlining construction timelines and the project’s significance in addressing Newport’s pressing need for reasonably priced housing.
Preparatory activities will persist in the upcoming period before actual building commences in spring 2027.
Upon completion, the scheme will deliver 21 two-bedroom houses, five three-bedroom properties, and 16 one-bedroom apartments.
The dwellings meet elevated insulation requirements and operate entirely through electric power, with design focused on maximising energy performance to decrease consumption and reduce utility expenses for occupants.
Funding for the initiative has been secured through Newport City Council and the Welsh Government.
Kinsey expressed enthusiasm about demonstrating the progress achieved at the location to local representatives, noting that the project will provide high-quality, energy-efficient homes making a tangible impact for community members, and that the organisation looks forward to advancing the scheme.
Tobias described the development as a significant achievement for Awen, stating that collaboration with Newport City Council on their first city project has been rewarding, and that broadening operational areas has enabled the organisation to contribute to increasing affordable housing supply across South Wales while addressing regional accommodation requirements.
Adan welcomed the initiative, indicating that the development promises to offer high-quality affordable accommodation for local families and individuals while responding to escalating demand, and that the council anticipates seeing the partnership flourish for the benefit of city residents.
