Cardiff Council appoints GOLDBECK for Atlantic Wharf 900-space car park

Published on

Cardiff Council has selected GOLDBECK Construction to construct a new multi-storey car park as a key component of the Atlantic Wharf redevelopment scheme situated in Cardiff Bay.

The Atlantic Wharf MSCP, located at the Red Dragon Centre along Hemingway Road, will offer approximately 900 parking spaces distributed across six floors.

Building work is expected to conclude in 2027.

The car park forms an integral part of the Atlantic Wharf masterplan infrastructure and has been positioned as an entry point to the regeneration zone.

GOLDBECK has stated that the development is intended to accommodate rising visitor numbers, enhance accessibility and facilitate future construction projects.

The site, positioned near the waterfront and major transportation corridors, has been deemed strategically vital to the overall initiative.

The facility will also supplement parking provision in the Butetown district and contribute to broader area improvements encompassing a new arena, accommodation establishments and commercial outlets.

GOLDBECK will execute the scheme under a comprehensive design and build arrangement, assuming accountability for detailed design, fabrication and structural assembly.

The six-level structure will feature two exterior ramps and a complete deck layout, with external works incorporating both planted areas and paved surfaces.

The building’s visual appearance incorporates a naturally anodised twisted fin exterior treatment.

The design consultancy team comprises Arup alongside Rio Architects.

A sustainability and future mobility framework created in partnership with Arup incorporates provisions for electric vehicle charging facilities, together with integrated solar panel arrays and battery storage capabilities.

The company has indicated this approach aims to facilitate the shift towards reduced-emission transportation while enhancing the facility’s operational performance.

GOLDBECK established its British operations in 2002 and employs 80 staff members distributed across four regional bases in Birmingham, Cardiff, London and Manchester.

The firm will deliver a complete turnkey service for the Atlantic Wharf parking structure, blending standardised building techniques with coordinated design and engineering capabilities.
