Natural Resources Wales signs Twf Charter to boost Welsh at work

Published on

Natural Resources Wales has formally adopted the Twf Welsh Language at Work Charter, becoming the latest organisation to embrace the initiative designed to expand the use of Welsh in professional settings.

The charter, which TUC Cymru developed, establishes a structured approach enabling employers, trade unions, and staff to collaborate in fostering bilingual environments within their workplaces.

The agreement was formalised on 15 October, aligning with Shwmae Su’mae Day, an observance dedicated to encouraging everyday use of the Welsh language.

Four fundamental principles underpin the charter, all aimed at helping organisations cultivate inclusive atmospheres where both English and Welsh can flourish.

Through this commitment, NRW aims to establish a bilingual working environment where personnel receive backing as they develop their Welsh language capabilities.

Ceri Davies, the organisation’s Chief Executive, commented that Welsh represents something beyond merely a linguistic tool—it constitutes an essential element of national and institutional identity.

She emphasised that the organisation’s mission connects directly with Welsh landscapes, habitats, and communities, stating that the Welsh language strengthens connections with partners and stakeholders, builds relationships, and deepens understanding of the environments under the organisation’s care.

The leadership expressed satisfaction at signing the charter and affirmed dedication to maintaining Welsh as a living language within the workplace.

Kevin Aitken, representing trade union interests, voiced support for the charter’s principles and noted the significance of this initiative to union members.

He indicated readiness to collaborate with NRW in promoting increased Welsh usage, creating more chances for staff to learn and apply the language, and helping Welsh develop across both rural and urban areas of Wales.

He emphasised that workplaces play a vital role in both normalising and promoting Welsh language use.

Daniel Goodbourn, who commenced a graduate role at NRW in the previous year, described the organisation’s learning and development provisions as particularly valuable.

He mentioned his participation in Welsh language courses, which offers immersion in Welsh language and culture while building confidence in professional contexts.

As an institution operating in both languages, Welsh surrounds staff constantly, and he continues acquiring vocabulary pertinent to his position.

Dr Mandy James, serving as TUC Cymru’s Bilingual Communications Officer, extended congratulations to Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru and participating trade unions for their pledge to the charter and their collaborative work toward bilingual workplaces and expanded Welsh use in employment settings.

She highlighted trade unions’ essential contribution to achieving linguistic justice for Welsh workers by protecting and promoting Welsh language rights as matters of equity and fairness, and by ensuring workplaces remain free from discrimination.

She noted that Welsh language competence represents both a practical skill and a cultural asset worthy of appreciation in professional and personal contexts.

Twf provides support for organisations seeking to develop future bilingual environments where employees can fully utilise their linguistic abilities.

Natural Resources Wales continues prioritising Welsh language promotion across its operational activities and community engagements.
