Welsh cultural institutions are poised to receive substantial financial support to expand public access to heritage and cultural resources across the nation.

The Welsh Government has distributed a sum of £550,000 through a dedicated grant programme designed to strengthen museums, archives and libraries throughout Wales.

The initiative will enable funded organisations to maintain and develop their activities through the end of the financial year in 2027.

Heledd Fychan, who serves as Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport, expressed the significance of these investments.

The minister emphasised that museums, archives and libraries serve as vital community anchors, fostering connections between individuals, their historical roots and shared cultural identity.

The funding enables projects throughout Wales to build upon existing achievements and extend their reach to additional communities and locations.

The minister also acknowledged the efforts of partnering organisations in developing these initiatives, noting their ongoing dedication to community engagement, heritage preservation and broadening cultural participation.

Ten initiatives located in the southern region of Wales have been selected to receive support.

In Blaenau Gwent, a partnership focused on cultural library services for young people will prolong the tenure of a dedicated youth library coordinator while intensifying outreach to demographics currently underrepresented in library services.

Merthyr Tydfil will advance its digital heritage museum initiative, which documents local history with particular emphasis on women’s contributions.

The project aims to strengthen connections with educational institutions and develop additional heritage walking routes.

Annabelle Dennis, who manages the Herstories project in Merthyr Tydfil, outlined the project’s scope.

The initiative combines an online platform with a physical museum installation featuring portraits and narratives of local women.

This approach creates an engaging experience for visitors while simultaneously establishing a permanent digital record that can expand as additional stories emerge.

The combined format ensures women’s histories from Merthyr Tydfil remain accessible in the present while being safeguarded for future generations, giving recognition to individuals previously absent from historical documentation.

Additional recipients include a Newport initiative to digitise local historical records and develop a location-based mobile application, as well as efforts in Rhondda Cynon Taf to enhance online availability of museum and library materials.

Monmouthshire is set to progress its archival documentation project, which will improve cataloguing systems and recruit additional volunteers.

Torfaen will complete the final phases of community outreach and digital heritage work as part of the programme administered on behalf of Gwent Archives and the Archives and Records Council Wales.

Neath Port Talbot plans to develop its travelling museum scheme by introducing an online platform for digital heritage content.

The investment seeks to engage broader audiences, advance equality within cultural participation and protect Wales’ varied heritage for posterity.
