Newport Chronicle: A 58-year-old man from the Birmingham area has been arrested after a lorry was stopped on the M4.

A 58-year-old man from the Birmingham area has been arrested after a lorry was stopped on the M4 on Saturday, April 18. The arrest took place following information shared by West Midlands Police, leading to intervention on the motorway. The lorry was stopped using pre-emptive tactics on the M4. Checks revealed the driver only held a provisional licence and was not insured to be behind the wheel. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "Following information passed to us by West Midlands Police, we stopped this lorry using pre-emptive tactics on the M4. "Checks on the driver showed they were a provisional licence holder only and not insured to drive the lorry. "Following an inspection of the vehicle, it was established that the registration displayed was incorrect and did not match the true identity of the lorry, which was notified off road". A search of the vehicle revealed that it was carrying several empty IBC containers, pumping equipment and tools. The spokesperson from Gwent Police continued: "A 58 year old male from the Birmingham area was subsequently arrested on suspicion of: Driving otherwise in accordance with a licence; no insurance; fraudlent use of number plates and going equipped to steal "They have been charged to court for the driving offences & fraudulent use of number plates. "They remain under investigation for the offence of going equipped to steal whilst our enquiries continue." Police said the lorry was also displaying false number plates and had been declared off the road. The man remains under investigation on suspicion of going equipped to steal while enquiries continue.
