Customers began forming queues early on Thursday morning ahead of the opening of Aldi’s newest store in Newport, located at East Retail Park in Maesglas.
The branch opened following months of anticipation and planning.
Planning permission had previously been granted for Aldi to combine two retail units at the site.
The new supermarket occupies a position between The Food Warehouse and Halfords.
Aldi real estate director Rob Jones said the company had identified an unmet need among Newport residents, particularly those living southwest of the city.
The Maesglas opening joins the retailer’s other stores across Gwent, including locations in Newport, Cwmbran, Blackwood, Ebbw Vale, Caldicot and Abergavenny.
Customers arriving at 8am gathered outside before the doors opened, with photographs showing people waiting to enter.
The queues reflected significant interest in Aldi’s low-price offering in the southwest of the city.
The branch stocks fresh British produce, everyday essentials and the retailer’s Specialbuys range.
Aldi has also increased the starting hourly pay for store staff to £13.50 across the country.
Its arrival further expands the retail offer at East Retail Park, which already contains B&M, Sports Direct, Halfords and Topps Tiles.
Readers of the Argus welcomed the development, anticipating stronger competition and additional choice for shoppers.
The Newport store is among 16 Aldi branches planned across the UK as part of the retailer’s expansion strategy.
Aldi is working towards 1,500 locations, with the programme backed by £370 million of investment this year.
