Ceredigion Museum moves closer to reopening after roof replacement

Published on

The restoration of Ceredigion Museum has reached a significant stage with the completion of a new roof for the Grade 2 listed Coliseum theatre in Aberystwyth.

The museum remains closed while the wider programme of repair, improvement and revitalisation continues.

DB3 Group is overseeing the project from its Aberystwyth studio, while local firm LEB Construction Ltd has carried out the roofing work.

The building was first given a slate roof by local builders in 1904.

More than 120 years afterwards, the original covering has been replaced with slate specially quarried at Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Two apprentices have been involved in the project, providing an opportunity for traditional roofing skills to be passed on to the next generation of local tradespeople.

The use of Welsh slate by local builders has also been described as an appropriate way of helping safeguard the historic structure.

Ceredigion Council said the roof replacement represents an important step towards the eventual return of visitors to the museum.

Councillor Catrin M S Davies, the Cabinet member responsible for Culture, said seeing local tradespeople work with Welsh slate to preserve the building was particularly fitting.

According to the council, the museum has been missed by residents and visitors, and the essential repairs are bringing it closer to opening its doors again.

Carrie Canham, the museum’s Curator, said considerable work remains before the attraction can reopen.

Nevertheless, she believes the delay will prove worthwhile, with the current programme establishing the foundations for a stronger and more resilient institution capable of serving communities throughout Ceredigion for generations to come.

Beyond the roof, the museum’s plans include updated displays, improvements to the visitor experience and increased opportunities for local community involvement.

New exhibitions and displays are also being prepared.

The council said work with schools and local communities will be central to determining the form of the museum’s future offering.

The roof project forms part of a broader programme aimed at restoring and revitalising Ceredigion Museum, with further improvements continuing while the venue remains closed.
