Two organisations based in the Swansea Bay area are to receive a combined total of £338,951 through the third phase of the Welsh Government’s Ynni Cymru initiative.
Swansea Mosque and Islamic Community Centre will partner with Pontardawe Golf Club in sharing the funding allocation.
The mosque and community hub accommodates approximately 5,000 visits per week through its religious services, educational offerings and community programmes.
The grant will enable the installation of battery storage capabilities alongside a hybrid heat pump system, measures designed to lower operational expenditure and enhance energy performance.
Among the facilities provided by the centre are a food bank, baby bank, youth engagement activities and educational initiatives.
Financial savings generated by the energy improvements will reinforce these services while also funding the distribution of warm packages to food bank visitors during the colder season.
At Pontardawe Golf Club, the financial support will assist in cutting energy expenditure and decreasing environmental footprint, contributing to the long-term viability of the venue.
The two recipients form part of 24 bodies throughout Wales due to receive portions of the 8.27 million pound third-round allocation.
Ynni Cymru operates as a Welsh Government scheme assisting communities, enterprises and public services in generating and consuming their own renewable energy.
Since the programme’s inception in 2023, more than 80 initiatives across Wales have received assistance, with cumulative investment through Ynni Cymru now exceeding 31 million pounds.
Hasan Miah from Swansea Mosque and Islamic Community Centre explained that the establishment functions beyond its role as a place of worship, with visitors regularly seeking assistance, social interaction, education and practical support.
The investment would help maintain a comfortable and accessible environment for elderly individuals, families with children and those facing economic difficulties while enabling continued community backing for years ahead.
Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy Adam Price expressed satisfaction that both recipients were gaining from the current funding round.
Both organisations were leveraging renewable energy to decrease expenses, thereby safeguarding vital provisions such as food banks and learning programmes while securing the future of important local amenities that unite communities through sporting and leisure activities.
Ynni Cymru was realising the Welsh Government’s ambition for greener, more affordable energy that was owned and utilised by people and organisations throughout Wales.
