Newport’s Six Bells pub transformed into flats after years of decay

A historic public house in Newport that had stood empty for years has been transformed into residential apartments following extensive restoration work.

The Six Bells establishment on Stow Hill once served as a popular gathering spot for emergency service personnel and healthcare workers throughout the city.

Following its closure in 2012, the building deteriorated significantly, with structural damage including shattered windows contributing to widespread mould growth and interior decay.

The property was acquired several years ago by Cheryl Davies and Melanie Duggan, whose business background includes the operation of Syner-Chi Wellbeing and Beauty.

The new owners undertook the considerable challenge of reviving the dilapidated structure and restoring it to active use.

Community members who worried that memories associated with the venue might vanish permanently were reassured when the proprietors committed to redevelopment plans centred around community benefit.

While detailed proposals for the site have yet to be formally announced, imagery depicting the completed interior renovations has emerged.

The building now houses two two-bedroom apartments across its upper levels.

The renovation work has eliminated all traces of the debris, rubble and construction waste that filled the premises just over a year ago, replacing it with modern living spaces that retain original architectural elements.

The higher-priced unit, listed at £230,000, comprises a double bedroom, a mezzanine sleeping area and an open-plan living arrangement.

The second apartment, priced at £220,000, contains a double bedroom, a single bedroom and open-plan living accommodation.

Both residences feature period characteristics including vaulted ceilings, exposed wooden beams and triple-aspect windows providing expansive views across the surrounding area.
