Sherman Theatre’s Balloon Girl tells tragic Victorian girl’s story with time travel

A theatrical production exploring centuries of Welsh history while drawing inspiration from a genuine Victorian tragedy has opened at Sherman Theatre in Cardiff.

Balloon Girl, developed by Tilt in partnership with the venue, presents an ambitious narrative that traverses 2,000 years while anchored to real events that occurred in the Welsh capital during the 1890s.

The production, penned and directed by Hannah McPake who co-founded Tilt, centres on Carol Gaudron, founder of Gaudron Galactic, a company preparing to launch its inaugural astronaut toward Mars.

Portrayed by Elin Phillips, Carol has nominated an ordinary individual named Eloise for the pioneering mission, supported by her artificial intelligence companion Albi.

The venture faces scrutiny from journalist Thora Gronberg, portrayed by Elan Davies, who raises concerns regarding safety protocols and whether Eloise represents a genuine opportunity or merely serves as a test subject.

The narrative takes an unexpected turn when the specter of Louisa Maud Evans, professionally known as Mademoiselle Albertina, materialises to guide Carol through her family’s complicated past.

The production grounds itself in historical fact: in 1896, during Cardiff’s Maritime and Industrial Exhibition, the 14-year-old Evans attempted a parachute jump from an airborne balloon.

The performance, orchestrated by showman Eugene Gaudron, drew substantial audiences but concluded in tragedy when the young performer perished.

Public mourning followed, with residents contributing funds for her burial and memorial, the gravestone of which remains visible at Cathays Cemetery to this day.

McPake utilises this sombre episode as the foundation for a broader narrative examining ambition, accountability and humanity’s tendency to repeat past errors.

Carol’s exploration of her lineage reveals how Eugene Gaudron exploited a vulnerable young person for spectacle, prompting reflection on whether contemporary ventures truly differ from historical exploitation despite technological advancement.

Assisting in this temporal expedition are Louisa and Gil, a reluctant seagull companion portrayed by Oliver Wood, who also embodies Albi.

The party journeys through Roman conquests, Viking incursions and into the Victorian period, encountering various figures including members of the Gronberg family.

The group simultaneously evades the Navigators, a gathering of historically notable female adventurers who introduce additional complexity to proceedings.

The ensemble cast demonstrates considerable versatility, transitioning between multiple roles across different eras.

Mari Fflur portrays both Eloise and Louisa, establishing parallels between the historical figure and the modern astronaut confronting potential peril.

Keiron Self handles several characters including Eugene Gaudron, Mike, Bjorn, Gaudronicus and the Dog Walker.

Seren Vickers, François Pandolfo and Rebecca Wilson assume various additional roles necessary to populate the historical segments.

As Carol’s investigation proceeds, the production reveals how Eugene Gaudron manipulated a young girl for commercial gain, with the protagonist recognising unsettling parallels between that exploitation and her own arrangements more than a century later.

The narrative builds toward an emotional climax addressing whether recognition of past mistakes arrives in time to alter subsequent events.

The production succeeds in rendering historical education engaging without presenting itself as a lecture.

Humour, inventive plotting and strong performances distinguish the piece, while the underlying narrative concerning a life cut short lends genuine emotional weight.

The connection to actual Cardiff history, with Evans’s memorial still present in the city, provides additional resonance and prompts consideration of contemporary decision-making.

The synthesis of regional heritage, science fiction elements, comedic components and accomplished acting establishes Balloon Girl as a compelling theatrical undertaking.

Clever construction, entertainment value and moments of genuine pathos combine to ensure that Evans’s narrative continues to be shared more than a century after her death.
