Gwent Police recorded approximately 9,900 sexual offences over a five-year period, according to official statistics obtained through freedom of information legislation.
The data, spanning from the start of 2021 through early September 2026, shows that fewer than ten percent of recorded rape and sexual assault cases resulted in suspects being charged or receiving a summons.
A significant proportion of investigations concluded with outcomes related to evidence challenges or complainants withdrawing cooperation.
The force logged 9,889 sexual offences during the specified timeframe, comprising 2,936 rape offences and 6,953 other sexual offences.
Of these, 624 cases reached the stage where a suspect faced charges or was summoned to court.
The statistics do not reflect final court outcomes, as police data tracks outcomes against individual offences rather than eventual prosecution results.
The figures for 2026 cover only the period up to September 3, preventing direct comparison with full calendar years.
Annual totals demonstrate a consistent upward trajectory.
Reported sexual offences climbed from 1,226 in the first year to 2,135 by 2025, representing an increase of roughly three-quarters over the four-year span.
The yearly breakdown shows 1,226 offences recorded in 2021, rising to 1,577 the following year, dipping slightly to 1,495 in 2023, then jumping to 1,887 in 2024 before reaching 2,135 in 2025.
The partial 2026 figure stood at 1,569.
Rape offences specifically grew from 374 incidents in 2021 to 623 in 2025, while other sexual offences expanded from 852 to 1,512 during the same period.
These figures alone cannot determine whether they reflect actual changes in offending patterns, shifts in reporting behaviour, or improvements in crime-recording practices.
Charging and summons outcomes followed a varied pattern across the years.
Overall sexual offence charges and summonses numbered 98 in 2021, increased to 130 in 2022, fell to 114 in 2023, rose slightly to 117 in 2024, reached 128 in 2025, and totalled 37 in the available 2026 data.
Rape-specific charges showed 30 in 2021, peaked at 46 in 2022, declined to 41 in 2023, dropped to 39 in 2024, fell further to 32 in 2025, and amounted to five in the partial 2026 period.
A charge or summons represents an interim stage in legal proceedings rather than a conclusive result.
Investigation outcomes revealed substantial obstacles.
The force registered 2,641 cases under the classification describing named suspects with victim support but evidentiary complications, alongside 203 cases under the corresponding Crown Prosecution Service category.
An additional 1,765 offences appeared under the designation covering victims who declined or withdrew support after a named suspect had been identified.
Further categorisations included 35 cases where victims were unable or unwilling to support action to identify an offender, and 48 cases marked as investigation complete with no suspect identified.
The New classification contained 1,221 offences, with 350 recorded in 2025 and 679 in the early portion of 2026, indicating that numerous recent reports had not yet reached a final determination.
