Faletau returns as Cardiff face Northampton in Champions Cup

Published on

Cardiff Rugby number eight Taulupe Faletau is poised to make his long-awaited comeback when the Welsh region travels to face Northampton Saints in the Champions Cup this weekend.

The Wales international has not featured since March and was a late scratch from last Saturday’s fixture against Leinster in Dublin.

His return comes as one of nine alterations to the matchday squad for the journey to Franklin’s Gardens.

Wing Josh Adams is also back in contention after recovering from the calf problem that forced him off during the summer programme.

The Wales international takes his place among the replacements.

Faletau slots into the back row alongside Dan Thomas and Semisi Paea, with Paea earning his first starting berth for the club.

The second row sees Tom Manz make his competitive debut in partnership with Rory Thornton.

Daf Hughes leads the side from hooker, while Sam Wainwright joins Danny Southworth in the front five.

Behind the scrum, Jarrod Evans is handed his first start since rejoining Cardiff during the close season.

Steffan Emanuel partners the centres, and Tom Bowen reverts to the wing duties.

The fixture represents Cardiff’s reappearance in European rugby’s premier club competition.

Head coach Corniel van Zyl anticipates a stern test against the English champions and acknowledged the significance of returning to the tournament.

The squad has worked diligently throughout the previous campaign to secure qualification, and this represents the culmination of those efforts.

While acknowledging the scale of the challenge presented by Northampton, the coach indicated the team embraces opportunities to test themselves against leading opposition.

Van Zyl noted that clubs throughout England have shifted towards more expansive approaches, with increased transition play and territorial contest.

The coach emphasised that accuracy across the full 80 minutes would prove essential to managing Northampton’s attacking capabilities.

The regional side must also negotiate a compressed schedule, with another fixture against the Sharks scheduled just five days subsequently.

Planning for this scenario has been in place for some time, and the objective involves delivering consistent performance across both encounters.

Sunday’s contest commences at 5.30pm.
