Newport gets permanent police resources after 241 Operation Krypton arrests

A second meeting of the Newport Business Improvement District took place earlier this month to address concerns affecting the city centre.

Representatives from businesses joined officials from Gwent Police, the local authority and housing services at the gathering, which provided an opportunity for open discussion about the challenges being faced.

Since the initial meeting held in June, Gwent Police has implemented Operation Krypton, a collaborative initiative aimed at improving safety throughout Newport.

The operation has resulted in 241 arrests, while Public Spaces Protection Orders are being utilised to tackle street drinking and aggressive begging.

Gwent Police has announced that additional resources will be provided to the city on a permanent footing.

The Police and Crime Commissioner has directed funding towards community safety initiatives concentrating on the city centre.

Among these projects is the Night Ambassadors Project, which delivers a visible deterrent presence within Newport’s evening and night-time commercial areas.

Further support will come from new legislation being brought forward by the UK Government this month, expanding the powers available to police and courts when dealing with perpetrators of anti-social behaviour.

Concerns raised by residents regarding recent incidents in Newport have been acknowledged, with officials emphasising their commitment to collaborative working with partner organisations to enhance public safety.

Separately, objections were voiced regarding the Welsh Government’s plans to close three motorway junctions in Newport as a potential solution to congestion on the M4.

While this proposal represents only one of several options under consideration, concerns have been raised that implementation could significantly compromise emergency service response times throughout the entire Gwent region.

The closure plan could additionally redirect additional vehicle flow onto residential roads, increasing traffic within local communities.

Advocates are calling on the Welsh Government to undertake comprehensive consultation with both emergency services and local residents, giving careful evaluation to the potential consequences for response times across Gwent.

The UK Government’s Sentencing Act 2026, which reduces the custodial periods served by certain offenders, has also attracted attention this month.

Individuals affected by these legislative changes or concerned about the potential release of an offender can access support through a dedicated helpline offering practical guidance, information and specialist assistance.

The Offender Release Helpline can be contacted on 0808 168 9280, with additional resources available at www.victimsupport.org.uk/offender-release-helpline.

Jane Mudd serves as Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner.
