Nando’s, Wagamama and Las Iguanas still open at Newport’s Friars Walk

Several prominent restaurant brands continue to operate within Newport’s city centre, including Nando’s, Wagamama, and Las Iguanas.

These establishments form part of the local dining landscape that has undergone significant transformation since the opening of the Friars Walk Shopping Centre in 2015, a development that arrived in the city nearly eleven years ago.

The arrival of the retail complex introduced numerous eateries to the area, though some have subsequently ceased trading.

Among those maintaining operations from the original tenant roster are Nando’s, Wagamama, Las Iguanas, Zizzi, and Drago Lounge.

Conversely, Frankie and Benny’s, TGI Fridays, Chiquito, and Bistrot Pierre have all shuttered their doors at this location.

The former Bistrot Pierre premises briefly housed Pierre’s during 2024, yet that venture lasted under twelve months before ceasing operations.

The Newport establishment ceased trading without warning, with the closure communicated via social media channels.

TGI Fridays also exited the market in 2024, notwithstanding the preservation of two thousand positions through a nationwide sale of the chain.

Additional TGI Fridays outlets situated on Newport Road in Cardiff and at Cabot Circus in Bristol similarly shut their doors.

Reader responses to the TGI Fridays closure provoked divergent reactions.

One social media commentator expressed sympathy for displaced workers, noting that pricing concerns should not overshadow the human impact of job losses.

Another respondent described the treatment of staff as disgraceful, observing that critics lacked understanding of the demanding schedules employees had endured.

Regarding employment implications, a reader commented that while job cuts were regrettable, the quality of offerings had deteriorated significantly and costs had escalated dramatically.

A representative for Pierre’s Newport stated at the time of closure that the permanent shuttering of the establishment was announced with considerable regret.

The spokesperson explained that the Bistrot Pierre label had transitioned to new ownership and would persist across ten remaining sites, directing interested parties to the company website for further information while expressing gratitude for customer loyalty over the years.

Newport’s inaugural Nando’s location commenced trading at Newport Retail Park in 2014, with the Friars Walk venue following twelve months subsequently.

That retail park continues to accommodate numerous national retailers, among them McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Costa Coffee.

The Spytty and surrounding leisure district offers additional dining options, including Harvester, Miller and Carter, McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Starbucks, and Costa Coffee.

Further national chains operating throughout Newport encompass Subway, Domino’s, Papa Johns, Toby Carvery, and Greggs.
