A 52-year-old from Cefn Adda Court in Newport has been imprisoned after admitting theft and property damage charges at the city’s magistrates’ court.
Marcus Whitton entered guilty pleas when his case was called for hearing.
The offences occurred across several months within the city.
Prosecutors outlined that chocolate and meat worth ÂŁ32.80 were taken from a Tesco outlet on January 28.
Additional counts related to a B&M retail location included the removal of razors and coffee valued at ÂŁ190.87 on April 6, followed by a further theft of Gillette razors costing ÂŁ138.91 from the same shop on May 8.
A single count of criminal damage concerned a sign at New Pastures Home Store, destroyed on May 28.
The court was told the damage amounted to ÂŁ380.
District Judge Sophie Toms observed that the catalogue of offences warranted immediate custody.
The bench noted the violations were committed during a period when the defendant was already subject to a suspended sentence order.
For the property damage, a 36-week sentence was imposed, with eight weeks to be served concurrently with other penalties.
A 12-week term was handed down for the April theft from B&M, while a further 12 weeks were added for the May raid on the same retailer.
One of those sentences was directed to run consecutively.
The 12-week penalty for the Tesco incident was ordered to run concurrently with the remaining terms.
Financial penalties accompanied the custodial periods.
Compensation of ÂŁ380 was awarded to New Pastures Home Store, with ÂŁ138.91 payable to B&M Stores and ÂŁ40.60 to Tesco.
The defendant was also ordered to meet ÂŁ600 in prosecution costs.
The bench indicated that the entered pleas had been reflected in the sentencing outcome, with higher terms having been considered otherwise.
The aggregate sentence totals 36 weeks.
The individual will serve approximately 40 percent of that period behind bars before conditional release.
