Two establishments on Commercial Street in Newport have been forced to cease operations for a period of ninety days following court-ordered closures connected to illegal tobacco distribution.
Yum Yum and Jacob’s were padlocked on October 7 after enforcement action taken jointly by Newport City Council, Gwent Police, and Trading Standards officers.
The closure applications were submitted to Newport Magistrates’ Court under provisions within anti-social behaviour legislation.
Both premises were shuttered with notices affixed to their storefronts indicating that the action stemmed from unlawful activities occurring at those locations.
Documentation posted at the sites explained that the judicial authority had determined individuals were involved in behaviour that was disruptive, inappropriate, or criminal in nature.
The postings further stated that the premises had caused or were considered likely to cause significant disturbance to local residents and visitors.
According to the notices, the court determined such measures were required to prevent continued, repeated, or future occurrences of such conduct.
The judicial rulings prohibit any entry to either premises throughout the three-month period unless advance permission and written consent have been obtained from Newport City Council officials.
These restrictions will remain operative until the stroke of midnight on January 6, 2027, unless additional legal directions are issued.
A spokesperson for Newport City Council verified that both Yum Yum and Jacob’s were sealed on October 7 following the submission of evidence demonstrating involvement in the distribution of unlawful tobacco products.
