A 23-year-old man has been sentenced for dangerous driving connected to an altercation on a Newport residential development.

John Connors admitted dangerous driving in relation to a Honda Civic car at Oliphant Circle in the Malpas area.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 11.

More serious violent disorder charges were not pursued and will remain on file.

Guntian Karhai, a 36-year-old co-defendant, admitted a violent disorder charge on the day of his trial at Cardiff Crown Court.

Previously he had faced charges of violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon, a metal bar, in a public place.

These charges were also not pursued.

At the time of the incident, Gwent Police publicly appealed for information.

A police spokesperson stated that around 6:15pm on Saturday, April 11, reports were received of a group of men fighting at Oliphant Circle in Newport.

Officers attended and searched the area.

No individuals were located and no reports of injuries were received, however an air rifle was found and seized nearby.

Three vehicles were reportedly involved and all three have now been found and recovered.

Enquiries are ongoing and appeals were made for anyone with information, including CCTV and dashcam footage, to come forward.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Matthew Edwards added that they understood such reports caused significant concern in the community.

While remaining open-minded, at this early stage of the investigation the incident appeared unconnected to an event near Graham Bell Close the previous day.

Connors, from Baird Road in Newport, received a 16-month prison sentence with a 19-month driving ban.

He was also ordered to pay a 187 pound surcharge.

Karhai’s case was adjourned until November 17 for a full pre-sentence report to be prepared.

The defendant from Howard Street in Gloucester was granted conditional bail by Judge Lucy Crowther, with one condition being that he could not enter the Gwent Police area.
