Proceedings have commenced at Gwent Coroner’s Court regarding the death of a Newport resident.

Katie Marshall, who lived on Vaughan Williams Drive in Newport, passed away at Bristol Royal Infirmary on September 24.

The 32-year-old had sustained significant burn injuries during an incident earlier in the year.

The court was informed that on Friday, June 26, Ms Marshall placed a black bin bag containing refuse onto a garden fire.

An explosion occurred after the bag was ignited, with the debris including a paint cannister.

The blast resulted in burns covering more than 45 percent of her body.

Emergency services were summoned by a nearby resident.

Medical personnel initially attended The Grange University Hospital before transferring her to the specialist burns unit at Morriston Hospital.

She subsequently required further specialist care at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Despite receiving treatment, her health declined and she died on September 24.

The medical certificate listed the cause of death as bacterial pneumonia, inhalation injury and flash burns.

Caroline Saunders, who serves as Senior Coroner for Gwent, formally initiated the inquest on the morning of October 12.

The case has been adjourned to allow investigators to examine the fire’s origin, the nature of her injuries and the medical treatment administered.

A full hearing has been listed for June 9, 2027 at 11am.

Those who knew Ms Marshall described her as a valued member of the community.

Online platforms were flooded with tributes and expressions of solidarity directed toward her partner, daughters and extended family, with numerous posts recalling her profound impact on others.
