O’Connell’s Bakery returns to Abergavenny Market after earlier closure

A husband-and-wife bakery operation is set to return to Abergavenny’s Market Hall after closing its previous town centre outlet earlier this year.

O’Connell’s Bakery announced that keys to the former market café were collected on Tuesday, with plans to transform the space into a bakery and sandwich bar.

The business operated from Frogmore Street for five years before announcing in May 2026 that it would not renew its lease, citing a combination of factors that had made continued operation unsustainable.

The proprietors identified declining customer numbers and reduced spending among shoppers, alongside increasing operating costs.

Additionally, the impact of flooding had placed further strain on the enterprise.

At the time of the closure announcement, owners Chris and Rhian explained that the shop’s position away from the main shopping street had contributed to reduced visits, with customers noting the absence of pedestrian crossings and traffic signals in the vicinity.

Despite the setback, the couple indicated they were exploring alternative opportunities while maintaining their Pontypool branch.

The new market café venture was kept confidential until legal documentation was finalized.

The announcement was made through the business’s social media platform, which boasts more than 42,000 followers, revealing plans for freshly prepared sandwiches and bakery products.

The Market Hall complex accommodates the Borough Theatre, the public library, town council offices, and the regular market.

Response from the public was overwhelmingly positive, with supporters urging the owners to retain the established brand name given its recognition within the local community.

The proprietors have committed to undertaking renovations in the coming weeks before opening the doors to customers.
