Construction has reached its highest point on a new housing project in Cardiff that will deliver forty-four social rented properties alongside improved public transport facilities.
The seven-storey building situated near Waun Gron Park railway station was formally topped out at a ceremony marking the structural completion of the development on the former recycling centre grounds in the Llandaff area.
The initiative forms part of Cardiff Council’s regeneration programme conducted through the Cardiff Living collaboration with Wates Residential.
Approximately 7.7 million pounds in funding has been allocated by the Welsh Government through its Social Housing Grant to support the project’s delivery.
Each of the forty-four apartments, comprising one and two-bedroom units, will incorporate renewable energy systems including ground source heat pumps and solar panel installations.
Council representatives indicated these technologies would contribute to decreased carbon output and reduced utility expenditure for incoming occupants.
A newly constructed access route will connect Waun Gron Park rail stop with a purpose-built bus facility.
According to the council, the interchange has been designed to handle bus services operating across western to southern, northern to southern and western to eastern trajectories throughout the city, enabling residents to travel between different districts without routing through central Cardiff.
The ceremonial event brought together elected members, development executives and construction personnel.
Council Leader Chris Weaver and Housing and Communities Portfolio Holder Lee Bridgeman were present alongside Stuart Jones, Regional Development Director for Wates Residential in Wales, along with Welsh Government representatives, local ward councillors and members of the building team.
Lee Bridgeman commented that the topping out represented a significant stage for a scheme set to provide essential affordable accommodation while supporting environmental objectives for the city.
He further stated that the development illustrated the council’s ambition to create thoughtfully planned and well-linked residential communities.
David Bullock, Regional Director for Wates Residential in Wales, noted that achieving structural completion constituted a meaningful achievement reflecting effective cooperation between the developer, the local authority and national government.
He explained that the partnership was focused on constructing forty-four high-standard council dwellings featuring sustainable and economically viable design principles.
