Phil Davies resigns from Welsh Greens citing online abuse after party Zionism vote

Published on

The former deputy leader of the Welsh Green Party has resigned from the organization, citing deep disagreements with recent policy decisions and expressing frustration about the broader left-wing political landscape in the United Kingdom.

Phil Davies announced his departure on the evening of October 6, concluding seven years as a party member.

Davies indicated that his decision was influenced by a controversial motion passed at the Green Party conference held in Brighton the previous Sunday.

The motion established that Zionism, defined as the movement advocating for the development and protection of a Jewish homeland in Israel, would be treated in the same manner as other forms of racism.

Additionally, the policy endorsed the creation of a unified democratic Palestinian state encompassing all of historical Palestine, with Jerusalem designated as its capital.

Following the adoption of this policy, the party’s leader Zack Polanski was denied entry to Israel.

Davies publicly characterized the passage of the motion as serving no practical purpose.

After Davies publicly announced his resignation, numerous offensive remarks appeared in online comment sections beneath related news coverage.

The former deputy leader shared one such article, which bore the headline concerning his resignation over the Zionism controversy, to his personal Facebook profile.

Responses from internet users included statements criticising individuals perceived as supporters of Israel and expressing what they considered positive developments in removing such perspectives from the party.

In his commentary accompanying the shared post, Davies observed that the nature of these responses from individuals unfamiliar with his contributions to the party over seven years illustrated why progressive politics in the UK had historically failed to achieve significant success.

He stated that without greater willingness among people to engage constructively with differing viewpoints, meaningful transformation in British politics remained unattainable.

Davies elaborated on his reasoning in a video statement published across social media platforms.

He expressed feeling marginalised within the Green Party of England and Wales, describing being treated merely as a representative voice from Wales who raised objections at various times.

He advocated for Welsh Green members to establish an autonomous party independent from the larger organisation, citing a lack of regard for his perspective and an impression that his concerns went unheeded.

The departing official stated that he had encountered persistent resistance when raising these matters over a two-year period.

He maintained that separation from the larger party structure and establishment as a distinct Welsh political force represented the correct course of action.

The adoption of the motion on Zionism, he stated, represented the decisive factor prompting his departure.

Davies articulated that the party had consistently championed Palestinian rights and maintained that the Israeli government was engaged in systematic violence against the Palestinian population.

However, he contended that this particular policy measure would not generate tangible improvements in conditions for Palestinians and that committing to a single-state framework undermined one of the four foundational principles of Green political philosophy, specifically grassroots democracy.

He characterised the notion of British-based political activists determining appropriate arrangements for Middle Eastern populations as resembling the very imperialistic approaches the party typically opposed, drawing a parallel to his personal objections to external determination of Welsh affairs.

The former official additionally highlighted what he perceived as the party’s absence of a coherent long-term approach to building electoral power.

He noted a tendency to pursue electoral opportunities without adequate strategic consideration for sustainable growth within the British political system.

Having invested considerable personal effort and resources travelling throughout Wales and England in support of electoral campaigns, he expressed depletion and disillusionment arising from this pattern of engagement without a clearly defined strategic direction.

He characterised the party’s overall operational philosophy as fundamentally reactive rather than forward-looking.

A Green Party member of the Senedd representing Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf conveyed disappointment at Davies’ departure, emphasising the significant value of his support during the party’s regional election campaign.

Offensive responses also appeared beneath Davies’ video statement, prompting him to subsequently disable commentary functionality on that content.
