Throughout May, drivers in South Wales will encounter 230 mobile speed enforcement vehicles operating across the region, including on key routes such as the M4 and A48.
Each month, hundreds of speed monitoring devices remain operational throughout South Wales.
These devices appear in several different varieties:
Permanently installed speed cameras
Calculated average speed systems
Traffic signal cameras
Cameras monitoring speed in designated zones
Over 20 additional permanently mounted speed cameras began functioning throughout South Wales during 2025, while a fresh road safety initiative was launched in Cynon Valley along the A4059 stretch between Abercynon Roundabout and Cwmbach.
A calculated average speed camera network was positioned along the newly introduced 50mph and 40mph stretches of the A4059, alongside two traffic signal and speed-monitoring cameras close to Mountain Ash Southern Cross Valley Link.
A fresh 20mph enforcement camera commenced operation in January on Rhiwbina Hill in Cardiff, with two further units scheduled to begin functioning this month:
Berw Road in Pontypridd (commencing May 1)
Rhiwbina Hill in Cardiff (commencing May 15)
South Wales mobile speed cameras throughout May
Drivers must also watch for numerous mobile speed enforcement units patrolling South Wales this month, appearing in areas such as Newport, Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, and the Vale of Glamorgan.
Details regarding all mobile speed cameras operating throughout South Wales during May can be found using the Safety Camera Location Search facility on the GoSafe website, as listing each individually would be impractical.
Mobile enforcement units will be present on major routes, encompassing the M4, A48, and A466.
Additional units will be positioned in the vicinity of Cardiff Airport along Fontgary Road or Rhoose Road and also on Porthkerry Road.
What consequences apply if you exceed the speed limit?
Excessive speed ranks among the primary causes of road accidents throughout Wales, according to GoSafe, a collaboration involving organisations such as the Welsh Government and Welsh emergency services.
Beyond the safety risks, violations result in financial penalties and endorsements on your driving record.
The baseline punishment for speeding comprises a £100 financial penalty together with three penalty points recorded on your licence.
In particular cases, motorists may choose to complete a Driver Awareness Programme instead, which involves a fee but prevents penalty points from being added to their licence.
