A fresh round of overnight and weekend highway shutdowns will bring considerable inconvenience as another stage of surface renewal gets underway.
Newport City Council has revealed the restrictions, which target Malpas Road as part of an extensive highway enhancement scheme.
Portions of the road will be blocked across two separate weekends and four weeknights throughout May, with substantial alternative routes operating and public transport services impacted.
According to a council communication, the scheme addresses a vital corridor used by large numbers of motor vehicles daily. The authority expressed gratitude to locals and visitors for their patience and cooperation during the works.
The restrictions commence on the evenings of May 5, 6, 7 and 11, with the southbound lane sealed off between the Pillmawr Road northern junction and Llanover Close between 8pm and 5am.
Households residing along the impacted stretch have been urged to refrain from leaving cars on Malpas Road while construction proceeds. The council cautioned that any automobiles positioned on or adjacent to the highway risk suffering damage and that liability rests with the proprietor.
Broader shutdowns will occur during the weekends spanning May 8 to 10 and May 15 to 17.
Across both of those weekends, the A4051 portion of Malpas Road will be inaccessible to all passing traffic from 8pm on Friday through to 5am on Monday morning.
The restriction will extend from slightly north of the Brynglas Road junction to the M4 interchange 26 roundabout.
Motorists hoping to reach Goodrich Crescent, Walford Street and the broader Brynglas locality will only be able to do so by traveling through the Harlequin roundabout during the closure.
A provisional single-direction arrangement will operate on Walford Street and Goodrich Crescent whilst the Harlequin–M4 segment remains shut.
Foot traffic will stay accessible throughout.
Coach services operating along Malpas Road will similarly experience changes, with commuters recommended to consult individual bus companies directly for current details regarding rerouting and timetable adjustments.
This most recent stage follows extensive weekday lane limitations and closures along Malpas Road for surface improvements and additional maintenance, which have already produced considerable hold-ups and traffic build-ups in the vicinity of the Brynglas tunnels and the Coldra area.
Online commentary from householders and elected members has consistently highlighted worries regarding the road’s state, specifically the A4051 stretch close to Malpas Park, with crater-like depressions cited as the chief source of frustration.
Newport City Council has verified that correspondence has been delivered to properties in the affected zones detailing access arrangements.
Additional details regarding the surface renewal initiative can be found on the council’s online platform and social media profiles.
