Welsh headteachers set for protected leave agreement

Education bosses in Wales are set to benefit from guaranteed time off under a deal reached between unions and the Welsh Government.

The right will be enshrined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions (Wales) Document from September onwards.

ASCL Cymru director Claire Armitstead stated that her organisation had long advocated for guaranteed holiday periods to be incorporated into the pay and conditions structure, and expressed satisfaction that this entitlement had now been officially recognised.

She described the move as a positive development in addressing the demanding workloads that lead to exhaustion and deter individuals from pursuing leadership roles within the education sector.

Nevertheless, Ms Armitstead cautioned that additional measures are required to guarantee these positions remain practical.

She indicated that more must be done to ensure leadership and classroom positions can be maintained long-term and to resolve staffing shortfalls across Welsh schools and colleges.
