Why CCTV has suddenly appeared around a Newport village

Published on

Surveillance equipment has been positioned at multiple spots across a settlement in Newport.

This matter came up during Nash Community Council’s gathering on April 2, which saw participation from Councillor Sarah Williams, Councillor Jennifer German, Stacey Williams, Desmond Williams, Alf Thomas, Gavin Luke, and Paul Clifford.

No explanations were offered for anyone failing to attend.

Council members explained that the cameras were put in place following discussions with Newport City Council and community members.

Separately, the council addressed plans to update the village hall’s kitchen facilities.

A sum of £20,000 was secured from the National Lottery for this undertaking.

The complete expense for the renovation amounts to £20,117 plus VAT.

The council decided to hire CFSC Bar Services to execute the project and confirmed it would cover any costs beyond the grant amount.

Additionally, the council considered the requirement for fresh flooring in the hall’s bar section.

A tradesperson had taken measurements but had not yet submitted a price estimate.

It was agreed that the chairperson would gather competing estimates, which would include reaching out to a nearby flooring business for supply and installation.

The council took note of an opening created when Mr Leo Knoyle stepped down on March 9.

Information regarding the vacancy has been posted on the council’s internet page and public board.

One local inhabitant has expressed interest in filling the clerk position.

The remuneration for this role was established at £2,500.

Should the candidate maintain interest, they will be called to attend an interview.

The council also considered the forthcoming yearly submission and financial review, anticipated in May.

There remains some ambiguity about the necessary documentation and key dates because the former clerk did not provide a complete handover.

It was agreed that Councillor Jennifer German would reach out to the former clerk for clarity, while the chairperson would request advice from One Voice Wales.

The council also examined the obligations associated with Making Tax Digital for VAT and the necessity for suitable computer programmes to maintain compliance going forward.

The RFO was tasked with obtaining price proposals for appropriate software.

The subsequent gathering is set for May 14 at 8pm.
